STRAWBERRY HILL : The Fairy Glade Trail, Mt. Horeb (2008)
Report to Strawberry Hills on forest rehabilitation activities along the Fairy Glade Trail, Mt. Horeb (2008)
Since the late 2007 to May 2008, we have continued to remove the invasive ginger lily from another 1.5 acres of forest in this special conservation zone. We have also maintained another 3 smaller 10m x 10m plots from the initial 1.5 acres removed. This brings to a total of 3 acres of Ginger Lily removed. The area under control has been divided into 9 smaller 10mx10m plots, as was done for previous areas, which allows for meticulous removal of ginger lily rhizomes which would otherwise spring back readily. Plot locations have been marked with global positioning system so that we can continue to monitor the impacts of ginger removal over the long term.
Figure 1. The first photograph shows one of the plots in the Mount Horeb forest with ginger lily removed from two plots. The second photograph is a shot of the third plot where Ginger Lily has been removed and forest tree seedlings can be seen springing back on the forest floor, indicating that the forest is coming back to its true, natural state.
